As a travel blogger, I’ve had the opportunity to visit many beautiful places around the world, but Sarajevo truly stole my heart. This vibrant city is unlike any other I’ve visited, with a fascinating mix of cultures, stunning architecture, and a rich history that is impossible to ignore.
When I arrived in Sarajevo, I immediately felt like I had stepped back in time. The city’s Old Town, known as Baščaršija, is a maze of winding streets, traditional bazaars, and Ottoman-style architecture that dates back to the 15th century. I spent hours wandering the narrow alleys, taking in the sights, sounds, and smells of the bustling marketplaces.
One of my favorite experiences in Sarajevo was visiting the Gazi Husrev-bey Mosque. As a non-Muslim, I was a bit nervous about visiting a mosque, but I was greeted warmly by the friendly staff and
given a tour of the mosque and its beautiful interior. I was struck by the peaceful atmosphere inside the mosque and the stunning details of the intricate tile work and calligraphy.
Another highlight of my trip was trying the local cuisine. Bosnia and Herzegovina is known for its delicious grilled meats, fresh bread, the burek (Bosnian pie) and traditional dairy products like kaymak.
As a history buff, I was also fascinated by the city’s complex and turbulent past. Sarajevo was the site of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914, which triggered the start of World War I. In 1992, the city was besieged for almost four years during the Bosnian War, leaving scars that are still visible today. I visited the Tunnel of Hope/Life Museum, which tells the story of the tunnel that was dug under the airport runway during the siege, to supply the city with food, weapons, and medical supplies.
Despite its difficult past, Sarajevo is a city that is full of life and hope for the future. I was struck by the resilience and warmth of the people I met, who were eager to share their stories and their city with me. As I watched the sunset over the city from the Yellow Fortress, I knew that Sarajevo would always hold a special place in my heart.
In conclusion, if you’re looking for a unique and unforgettable travel experience, I highly recommend adding Sarajevo to your list. With its mix of history, culture, and delicious food, this city is a hidden gem that is waiting to be discovered.
