Lukomir

Highest altitude village in Bosnia and Herzegovina. If you’re looking for a unique and off-the-beaten-path experience in Bosnia and Herzegovina, a visit to Lukomir village is a must. Tucked away in the remote mountains of the country, Lukomir is the highest and most isolated village in Bosnia, and it offers a fascinating glimpse into traditional Bosnian life and culture.

My journey to Lukomir began with a scenic drive through the mountains, passing through stunning landscapes and picturesque villages along the way. As we approached Lukomir, I could see the village perched on a hilltop in the distance, with traditional stone houses and haystacks dotting the landscape.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by friendly locals who welcomed us with open arms and invited us to explore the village. The village’s unique architecture, with its distinctive stone roofs and wooden shutters, is unlike anything I had ever seen before. Walking through the narrow streets and alleyways, I felt like I had stepped back in time to a bygone era.

We had the opportunity to visit a traditional Bosnian home and learn about the customs and traditions of the village. The family was incredibly hospitable, sharing stories and insights into daily life in Lukomir. We were served homemade Bosnian coffee and a delicious spread of local delicacies, including homemade bread, cheese, and smoked meat.

As we explored the village, we were struck by its rugged and remote beauty. The surrounding mountains offered breathtaking views of the valley below, and the sound of the nearby river added to the peaceful and serene atmosphere. We also had the opportunity to witness traditional Bosnian handicrafts being made, including weaving and woodcarving.

One of the highlights of the visit was a hike to a nearby viewpoint, where we were rewarded with stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The hike was moderately challenging, but well worth the effort, and it offered a unique perspective on the village and its surroundings. If you are not skilled or in a great physical condition for hiking, there are easy-walk trekking paths as well.

Throughout the visit, we were struck by the warmth and hospitality of the locals. Despite its isolation, Lukomir is a vibrant and close-knit community, and it was clear that the people take great pride in their village and its traditions.

Overall, a visit to Lukomir was an unforgettable experience, and one that I would highly recommend to anyone traveling to Bosnia and Herzegovina. It’s a chance to step outside of the usual tourist destinations and immerse yourself in a rich and authentic cultural experience.
